I trialled PIC32mk hoping to use FPC with it, but I ran some typical firmwares we used, and it was slower than the MU on all counts. Nowadays dspic33e mu810/814, hopefully dspic33c in the future, before they were 33f MC510, but a decade ago 18F (18F*j60, the ethernet part). I work in machine vision with Delphi ( a recent version). That successfully installed the Free Pascal compiler (version 3.1. Beside changing the installation directory (click on the Set InstallDir button), the only other thing I did was to press on the Trunk button as shown on the image below.

I then proceeded to install FPC and Lazarus where I wanted it.

Except maybe mikroe, for PIC, and probably for AVR too, Free Pascal is not there. That was quite a large addition, but it was not complete as will be seen. The rest is a matter of compiler technology and modest extensions. Some of the older guys might have had CS introduction lessons with Pascal's successor Modula2, which was targeted at lowlevel code. Do you remember the last time you used that in C ? :-) Standard Pascal is more prohibitive, but most people used the Borland dialects after say late eighties, so how relevant is that? And Standard Pascal had bit level access with sets natively, so it was a bit embedded. The only thing something that Free Pascal doesn't have an equivalent for right now is local stack allocation with Alloca. Most Delphi like Pascals are pretty much as suited as C. As far as see it, a 'P'rogrammer, programs anything in any language. Learning a new programming language is a job for a couple of days, so, anyone can program in any language, providing he/she is really a programmer. s even worse than seeing someone jump from requirements to coding, skipping the most important part of the work, the project.

Programming is about algorithms and data, writing the code is the dull typist part of it. Never the less, I have my own opinion about. In practice, the boss, the budget, the costummers and the market will make the quality selection. Of course one can allways discuss the eficiency of the final product and the features the language delivers and the limitations it imposes, and a lot of other stuff, but most of it would be more academic than practical.
