To run the blue light filter feature ‘Night Shift’ on your Apple Mac, you must be running MacOS version Sierra 10.12.4 or newer on one of the following Mac computers. You can choose to activate it between sunset and sunrise or specific hours, or enable it until the next day, or adjust your Mac’s screen color temperature.

To activate the feature, go to System Preferences > Displays > Night Shift.

To run the native blue light filter app ‘Night Shift’ on your iOS device, you must be running iOS version 9.3 or newer (iPhone 5s or iPad 2). You can then schedule the feature for specific times of the day, or enable it until the next day, or adjust your screen’s color temperature, thereby filtering out the blue light. While those apps will help you get better sleep, checking social media or messaging your friends will increase brain activity and will keep you awake longer. Night Shift uses your iOS device’s clock and geolocation to determine when it’s sunset in your location, then it automatically shifts the colors in your display to the warmer end of the spectrum. Night Shift ramps up the yellows, oranges, and reds on your iPhone or iPad’s screen.

Many studies, then, tout the negative effects of staring into screens after sunset. In scientific language: melanopsin communicates with the suprachiasmatic nucleus in your brain, an area responsible for regulating your internal clock and sleep patterns. When melanopsin - which was only discovered around the turn of the century - encounters blue light, it essentially shouts “ daytime! awake!” at your brain. Specifically, blue light is thought to affect a photoreceptor called melanopsin in your eyes. And then the following day, on fewer hours of sleep, you’re going to miss even more Instagram and Twitter posts. So, when you’re scrolling through the Instagram or Twitter posts you might’ve missed during your busy, exhausting day before rolling over and going to bed, you’re asking for trouble: The more you vacuously stare into your device’s microcosm, the less likely you are to simply, peacefully drift off to sleep. Devices, such as laptops and smartphones, emit a bunch of the stuff. This update includes one particularly utilitarian feature, dubbed “Night Shift,” that’s only meant to help you sleep. On Monday, along with showing off its new iPhone SE, 9.7-inch iPad Pro, and “ spaceship,” Apple released an update to iOS 9: iOS 9.3.
